SBP Releases Short Statement On Gilas Naturalized Player Justin Brownlee's Second Positive Test For A Banned Substance

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has confirmed the report that Gilas Pilipinas Naturalized Player Justin Brownlee has tested positive due to a banned substance. The said banned substance was found in a "recreational drug". Spin.PH first broke the news just a couple of days after Barangay Ginebra fell to the TNT Tropang Giga at this year's PBA Governors' Cup Finals.
In a short statement, the SBP says they're already handling the situation along with Brownlee's US-based lawyers.
"The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is aware that Gilas Pilipinas player Justin Brownlee has received notice of an adverse analytical finding. Brownlee is currently dealing with the situation aided by his US-based lawyers," the SBP said in a statement released to the media.
"The SBP wishes to clarify that FIBA has not issued any official ruling as of date," the SBP added.
On the heels of Justin Brownlee's second positive test, the Gilas Pilipinas Naturalized Import may or may not see action at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in August.
Brownlee served a 3-month suspension for failing a random drug test after the Asian Basketball Games Final on October 6, 2023.
The Barangay Ginebra resident import recently competed for Gilas Pilipinas at the February window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. Gilas Pilipinas played Chinese Taipei on February 20 and New Zealand on February 23, respectively.
