SEA Pride on the Grand Slam Stage
Janice Tjen of Indonesia and Alexandra Eala of the Philippines have both made historic breakthroughs in the women’s singles draw:
- Alexandra Eala, the 2022 US Open junior champion, made history as the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open Era, defeating No. 14 seed Clara Tauson in a dramatic comeback on the Grandstand Court. She will next face Cristina Bucsa in Round 2, scheduled for Wednesday, August 27.
- Janice Tjen became the first Indonesian woman to win a Grand Slam singles match since Angelique Widjaja’s Wimbledon victory in 2003. Tjen stunned 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in her debut and now advances to face Emma Raducanu in Round 2 on Wednesday, August 27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
More SEA Power in Doubles
Joining the singles stars is Aldila Sutjiadi, also from Indonesia, who will compete in the women’s doubles alongside partner Nadiia Kichenok. Their first-round match is scheduled for Thursday, August 28.
